I voted no and it didn't work. I deleted my cookies and I could vote again.

I voted yes, it still didn't work. I deleted my cookies and played Assassin's Creed 2, that worked.

Loving the new layout. Now I know exactly who to hate and ignore by looking at the flag by their names, saves a lot of reading.

I voted "no" but nothing went up on either tally of "yes" or "no."

On a somewhat related note, I can't submit a PotD either.

Dear CnC-Files community,

as some of you may have noticed looking at the latest news the last few months, there weren't really many from yours truly. After the announcement of CnC4, there were numerous ups( FMV teaser) and downs (first screenshot) that put my motivation and dedication to CnC under quite a stress, leading to my second-guessing being part of the network I, supposedly, should fill with news and content- and the time has come to take my hat.

For various reasons (Mod position at Petroglyph forums, longer workshifts and shift in gaming preference, amongst other things) I won't continue being part of the FileFront network, meaning that now I won't have to have conscience issues when I look at how relatively barren the site is due to my inactivity stick out tongue

I'd like to thank JohnWE for giving me this opportunity, and apologize to you guys and gals that with the most recent instalment, I didn't live up to the fullest, even though that is, at least partially, due to EA's misunderstanding of the CnC franchise and PC gaming in general- since, even though franchises such as NfS received successful make-overs, CnC is heading to a direction that does not suit my tastes, and with the SAG engine, short development time and online restrictions, there's not much left to keep my interest high in the game- Now, don't get me wrong, the FMVs will be definitely mind-blowing, and the new gameplay ideas aren't all bad, as is the music, but I can't really see why the innovations had to come in expense of the core experience, a short development cycle and the sacking of almost the whole EALA team, who, just to remind us, did a great job with RA3 and a decent one with CnC3.

Perhaps in the future, EA will realize what CnC is all about and give it the attention and care it deserves (hopefully with production values rivaling the God of war franchise), but until then, I can't be a member of CnC-Files when I'm myelf not actually behind EA's latest moves.

Regardless, I'd like to thank EALA, Westwood, 2Poc and Apoc for their hard work and wish the fired employees all the best in their future endeavours.

Yours truly,

hagren

Does this mean that Command & Conquer will be getting a comic book? Or graphic novel for those who prefer for it to sound more mature?

@1 Meh No Worries stick out tongue
Well I'd Choose "The ability to join a multiplayer game in progress"

 #3 - Posted by: gamechaser002 (Member) on 07-29-2009 at 10:38
XP persistance

 #4 - Posted by: NuclearCrusher1 (Member) on 07-29-2009 at 10:58
No more gamespy, and joining a multiplayer game in progress.

#5 - Posted by: StarFox (Member) on 07-30-2009 at 03:38
No more gamespy, probably the worst masterserver provider ever, with the worst software package you could think of. Now if the game is going to be good too, unlike CNC3, then I might consider buying it.

 #6 - Posted by: gamechaser002 (Member) on 07-30-2009 at 20:06
one thing that still worries me is the active requirement for an internet connection to use the game.....i mean out at sea, you aren't going to be allowed to plug in your laptop to a ship network, so your SOL there

EA may have lost my money with that one....we'll have to wait and see

 #7 - Posted by: The_H4mm3r (Member) on 07-30-2009 at 20:55
Its dumb that you have to be connect to the internet at all times. Sure most people can get at least dialup but it would still be annoying.

 #8 - Posted by: 343guiltymc (Member) on 08-03-2009 at 15:52
You forgot another one of the"Kane lives!" hype that fueled the CNC3 launch...................

#9 - Posted by: TiberiousKirk (Member) on 08-11-2009 at 10:08
None of the above. I would like to see good graphics and a amazing story line for the finish.

#10 - Posted by: PwnDoom (Member) on 08-14-2009 at 10:05
NO more Gamespy is my #1, I dislike gamespy because of connectivity issues.
Second would be the different classes.

 #11 - Posted by: EdLihead1 (Member) on 08-16-2009 at 20:16
I like the classes. Just a side note, with votes unbelievably down, has anyone else had trouble logging in to their account? i had to make a variant name because i got an error message every time i tried to sign in to my old one (stupid question, anyone with the problem can't comment to answer)

 #12 - k22 - Posted by: k22 (Member) on 08-22-2009 at 05:44
I think EA must make new "c&c Generals" with very good graphics like Company of heres and good ai thats what it need !

#13 - Posted by: Forte (Member) on 09-12-2009 at 12:45
I like it all. But most of all, I like the xp persistance and the ability to join multiplayer games in progress, because it means I won't have to deal with snobs or players who deem skill obsolete compared to rank and time played.

#14 - Posted by: DeeEmmSee (Member) on 10-01-2009 at 10:49
Im mot sure, I was hoping for a new Generals, not to mention that I have read somewhere that this is PC only - so hence ridiculous system requirements to play. I bouight a ps3 just to play red alert3 at max detail, as It was considerably cheaper than upgrading / buying a new pc

 #15 - Posted by: simon1812 (Member) on 10-05-2009 at 17:06
something weird , when I try to vote my screen goes white, why is that?

#16 - Posted by: JohnWE (Staff) on 10-06-2009 at 08:47
That's the reason I haven't updated the poll in the longest time. It is broken.

#17 - Posted by: greenfuzz (Member) on 10-07-2009 at 17:09
I would like to see a good ending of cnc3 with bad ass graphics if that chapter is closed than re-open the chapter generals

#18 - Posted by: baskev (Member) on 11-02-2009 at 06:44
sorry but i dodnt think its that good. i am glad with their onw online servers etc.
But this aint RTS anymore. a couple of things that make a rts a rts
1: resource managment so no cash like generals but tibiruim fields or ore etc
2: Base building: base building with turrets walls. like the old days that you needed to defend yourself agianst spy's.
3: no 10 different options for 1 unit like red alert 3. But more like kane's wrath
4: no 100 different powers you can use.

man every rts the come's out looks more and more like a action game.
hope this game tottaly surprises me. but i doubt it.

C&C4: Nod Crawler Revealed - Official News
  Posted by: JohnWE on 12-21-2009 @ 11:16
This News Item has been viewed 3428 times! CnC 3 News
EA has revealed the Nod Crawler designs for all three classes: Offense, Defense and Support. The unit profile is full of useful information and a video showing off all the different crawlers and their deployed weaponry. This is why the strategy in C&C4 moves away from base building and more towards the single multipurpose crawler:

Quote:
Recently, the TCN Conflict has forced a fundamental shift in military strategy, focused around the isolated TCN nodes scattered across the planet. The TCN's global nature has made it difficult to defend for even the Nod / GDI alliance, but the advent of the Crawler MCV has changed the face of warfare. Like the nuclear weapons of the Cold War era, Crawlers became the measure of a faction's power, and Kane, despite his alliance with GDI, had no intention of falling behind them in military strength. After the end of the TCN Conflict, Kane decreed that the Brotherhood must adapt to a new era of warfare and commissioned a series of Nod Crawlers to help GDI defend the TCN.

The Defense crawler has a double Obelisk of light, which is pretty cool in my opinion. Head to the unit profile for all sorts of useful info.

MidEast Crisis 2 Guardians of Islam Updates - Mods

MidEast Crisis 2, the professional looking mod from ISOTX is working on the latest version of their mod. This will include the third side, the UN, and also have some updates to existing factions, which this update focuses on.

The Guardians of Islam (awesome name, eh?) are getting a new base defense, the Ifrit tower which shuts down vehicles in one mode, and fires damaging rockets in the other mode.

And here are the new two subfactions which you can play as:

Quote:
Rememberance Party
•Unlock and allow the use of Martyrs
•Unlock and allow the use of Demo Trucks
•Allow use of a special power that turns all Jihadists in a small area, into Martyrs.

Progressive Party
•Allows the use of the Jinn power
•Allows the use of the Jinn's Wireless Tower bonus (still working on that)
•Unlocks the Tunguska ability, an area Mr.Stop (when used, all nearby enemy units are hit by a short-term Mr.Stop)

Greetings Reborn fans, It's been a while since you've heard from us so were making a BIG update to compensate.

Here's a little snippit of the update, regarding the new MLRS for General Ironside:
Quote:
Since it's debut in 1983, the M270 has been a valuable asset to US military commanders, as well as a pain in the ass to anyone designated as it's target.

Despite the introduction of the newer and more agile AV-201 tomahawk launcher, General Ironside prefers to "rain hell" with his own modified versions of the M270 dubbed the "M280". Capable of launching multiple conventional rockets as well as EMP ATACMs, the M280 is a definite threat to entrenched GLA positions as well as armored vehicle columns.

There is a lot more General Renders and a lot more models to be shown! Head on over here to read the full update!

Interview with EA CEO about C&C - EA Company News

This News Item has been viewed 4197 times! CnC 3 News
Kotaku had a recent interview with EA CEO John Riccitello (good first name, I might add) in which he mentioned the future of Command & Conquer. Take this article and what he says into consideration when trying to predict the next C&C game. I can't say more because I am under NDA for the next C&C game (after C&C4), but this article sheds light on the shift in RTS gameplay away from the 10 year standard to what it might become.

Quote:
"[Van Ceneghem] and I have a shared vision that the RTS category is due for fundamental innovation and not just cooler graphics," Riccitiello said. "We've gotten to the point where you can see the particles around individual grenade explosions inside rooms where windows fall apart. That was never what made RTS good. That was just sort of eye candy on top of a very traditional game mechanic. From when Red Alert and Starcraft sort of defined the genre, it hasn't moved."

Gentlemen, make your predictions.

As we're approaching the 3-month countdown before C&C4 is released, EA has given us a new video displaying how a unit is made. This time it's the Nod Salamander, a flying vehicle which fires missiles and flames. The video details the entire unit creation process from the concept art all the way through animating and making the weapon effects. If you've played the beta, you'll remember this unit is the one you must run away from or else the napalm fires will decimate you.

What is happening at EALA? - Miscellaneous
  Posted by: JohnWE on 11-10-2009 @ 16:36
This News Item has been viewed 6473 times! CnC Generals News
There has been some cause for concern over at Electronic Arts Los Angeles, the studio which has created the past few C&C games. Here's what we know.

Yesterday, EA announced the laying off of 1,500 people, which is 17% of their workforce after announcing that they would cut the bottom third of their games.

Some of the layoffs are occuring at EALA. From Facebook, this message was displayed from Greg Black (the lead balance designer on Red Alert 3):
Quote:
Greg Black didn't mean to imply that C&C4 was being cancelled, its not. However, the majority of the RTS team is still getting laid off when its done. R.I.P. 2003-2009

It was removed within minutes, but not before some quick fellow caught it.

Later, Greg Black made it official.
Quote:
has 99 problems but EA ain't one. If you still work at EA I feel bad for you son.
He no longer works for EALA.

Finally, today, EA CEO John Riccitello said that EA would be focusing on the franchises which were most profitable, which are classified as the ones which sold over two million units in their latest titles.

C&C: Red Alert 3 sold over 1 million in the first 8 months, so I'm not sure if it qualifies as a highly profitable game.

What does this mean for the future of C&C? Is C&C4 the end of Command & Conquer? What will happen after most of the C&C development team is laid off? Tell us here.

European Conflict October Mega update - Mods
  Posted by: JohnWE on 11-10-2009 @ 16:14 - Source: http://www.moddb.com/mods/european-conflict
This News Item has been viewed 6491 times! CnC Generals News

Hello this is the European Conflict mod reporting. As a special treat for our lack of public activity recently, we have
finally created our first trailer for EC, courtesy of The DR and Nagerb.

We present to you, our first trailer!

We hope you've enjoyed our first video trailer.

American Confederacy Sioux

In recent years, the American Confederacy has begun phasing out some of it's older fixed-wing aircraft, most notably the AC-130, also known as the Spectre Gunship from previous campaigns. Rather than completely scrap the concept of a close-support aircraft, however, the Confederacy's brightest minds managed to rebuild the old howitzers from the AC-130s, and fit them to the wings of one of their latest helicopter designs under the new name of repeater cannons. This amalgamation of old and new was deemed the Sioux, a helicopter capable of dealing heavy damage at close support range, removing the need for the old AC-130, as well as providing a support platform that was capable of providing support for more than 90 seconds. The new helicopter frame was also of monumental design, removing one of the major flaws of all previous rotor designs - the need for a tail rotor.

With the unique NOTAR, the main rotor's torque is cancelled by a high volume of low pressure air expelled close to the tail-fins, thus changing the boundary layer of air, and stabilising the helicopter without the need for a tail rotor, a critically vulnerable part of all helicopter designs up until this point in time. The new design makes the frame far more hardy, and capable of absorbing far more damage than any other helicopter to date. To further increase their effectiveness, the Siouxs were fitted with state-of-the-art Anti-Tank missiles, cleverly housed in old-fashioned pods to fool opposing factions. Due to this old-fashioned design, the number of missiles carried is massive, but the reload time is rather long, due to the cramped space for the reloading mechanism. The Sioux is in every sense a modern support platform, and their use can quickly turn the tide of any battle.

Unit Abilities

  • It has speed, agility and survivability.

  • Heavy damage output vs all targets.
American Confederacy Dustrider

The American Confederacy have always played an extremely simplistic role in the war, in that one-on-one, they, and all of their units, cannot be beaten. Seeing this one-sided nature to their tactics, the Confederacy requisitioned a new unit, one that did not depend on powering through several units before eventually being overwhelmed. Instead, the Dustrider was developed for it's speed, agility and survivability. If damaged, it has the speed to make it out of a battle without being destroyed, and is capable of pursuing units to finish them off. Like every Confederacy unit, the Dustrider is capable of dealing high damage to any foe. It also sports a lightweight chassis that was installed to allow the Dustrider to ambush enemies from cliffs - the lightweight chassis combined with heavily absorbent suspension allows the Dustrider to literally drive over cliffs, landing at the bottom with no more than a scratch. Once there, it unloads it's payload of missiles, a weaponset unique amongst the Confederacy's many units courtesy of their corrosive payloads, which deal damage to any vehicle that stays within the blast radius for too long. However, due to the lightweight chassis, the armour of the unit is also less than that of other Confederacy units, allowing it to be destroyed quickly if it directly engages the enemy for too long, a feature that most other Confederacy units excel at. Using a Dustrider effectively is key to a Commander's victory - using it ineffectively is often the key to his downfall.

Unit Abilities

  • High armour and good resistance to damage.

  • A high damage output vs structures with its corrosive weapons.

  • Able to pass over cliffs.
United Asian Nations Scimitar

Given their dependence on old-fashioned munitions, such as napalm technology, the United Asian Nations often fell when fighting head-to-head with enemy tanks, given their advanced weaponry. This was seen as a relative weakness in their arsenal, and as such the Scimitar was developed with the aim of providing heavy fire support from a distance. Equipped with a massive anti-tank cannon, the Scimitar is capable of inflicting heavy damage on enemy units without taking any return fire due to the range of it's unwieldy cannon. This unwieldiness has it's drawbacks however. The Scimitar, while equipped with an extremely powerful engine, is still unable to achieve particularly high speeds due to the sheer weight of the chassis and cannon, and takes an even longer time to turn, due to the nature of the chassis carrying the cannon. However, should it be allowed to continue in one direction for too long, the Scimitar will pick up a surprising turn of speed due to it's momentum, often surprising enemy tank commanders who feel they have made it safety. The cannon also takes an extremely long time to reload - so unless a commander is sure of their victory, sending a Scimitar into battle without adequate support will result in a heavy financial loss as the Scimitar can easily be out-manoeuvred and out-gunned.
Unit Abilities

  • Long range.

  • Heavy damage output vs vehicular targets.

  • Useful top speed despite poor initial acceleration.

We hope you've enjoyed our latest update.
This is the EC team signing off.

As every friday since its conception, Apoc added a new Q&A answering fan questions regarding CnC4. Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
Will the player be able to use Forgotten units in multiplayer?

Yes! The Visceroid, Forgotten Ironback, and soon-to-be-named Forgotten Mutant Bus (http://contest.commandandconquer.com) are all playable units in multiplayer, built from the mutant hovel. Currently these units build instantly but have a limit per unit, allowing a player to quickly replenish their forces from a set point on the battlefield.

First CnC4 Unit Profile: The GDI Crawler - Media

Apoc is continuing the tradition that started with Kane's Wrath and is going to release unit profile after unit profile, possibly one for every following week.

Starting this, he posted the GDI Crawler in all of its forms (Offense, Defense, Support), along with the mandatory video clip and concept art.

Here's a snip of its profile:

Quote:
The Mobile Construction Vehicle has been the linchpin of the GDI military forces for eighty years. Its unprecedented mobility and versatility has enabled GDI commanders to quickly combat any threat around the globe. Although the MCV has evolved over the decades, its primary role, namely the rapid projection of force anywhere in the world, has remained constant. The new MCV Mk. VII is the latest incarnation of the time-tested Mobile Construction Vehicle, developed specifically in response to the TCN Conflict.

  CnC 4 Developer Q&A No. 5 - Official News

This News Item has been viewed 7799 times! CnC 3 News
As it slowly becomes tradition, 2Poc added the 5th QaA session today which gives more insight into the- under the hood quite complex- gameplay mechanics of CnC4. Here's an excerpt:

Quote:
How do the Mastodon and Mammoth tank differ in terms of roles on the battlefield?

The Mastodon is a slow-building, high CP, long-range artillery unit (especially good against structures) that can be upgraded to do AOE damage around itself. It is susceptible to fast-moving units, and especially those armed with laser weaponry. The Mammoth is slightly faster and does additional damage to medium-sized targets, such as your average tank, and also has a special weapon known as the “taunt laser.” Any unit that the Mammoth is firing on is forced to fire on the Mammoth, and with an upgrade that gives the Mammoth reflective armor, this can be deadly for enemy forces.

CNCSaga's Interview with Composer James Hannigan - Interviews

Zephyr from CNC Saga, the french C&C fansite, has allowed us to release their interview with the Composer for C&C Red Alert 3 and Uprising in English. Enjoy!

CnCSaga : Hello James, can you introduce yourself to the French C&C community ?

James Hannigan: I'm James Hannigan, a composer working mostly in games and TV.

CnCSaga : What is your musical path?

J.H. : I've been composing professionally since around 1994. My first real involvement with games was from around 1995, when I took the job of in-house composer at EA Europe, where I stayed for a few years before going freelance again.

CnCSaga : What are the video games on which did you work?

J.H. : Along with Command and Conquer, other games I've scored include Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Freelancer, Conquest: Frontier Wars, Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest, Sim Theme Park, Brute Force, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Reign of Fire, Warhammer: Shadow of the Horned Rat, Privateer: The Darkening, various EA Sports games and quite a lot of others. I also work in TV – mostly recently on music for sci-fi show, Primeval. Over the years, I've picked up a BAFTA Award (Sim Theme Park) and three nominations.

CnCSaga : What is the main difficulty when you compose the music of a video game?

J.H. : Working out what message to send to players, emotionally speaking, and what actually motivates the music - because it's not always led by picture/story in the way film music can be. It's not just about setting the style of music, but about when you hear music and why. Keeping music connected to gameplay or adding something to the experience that you wouldn't have without it can be quite challenging. If you don't give much thought to this side, music can get a bit lost or end up being superfluous. You want to create a situation where it's necessary to have the music in order to play the game well, work out what's happening and to add enjoyment to experience.

CnCSaga : What are your inspiration sources?

J.H. : Games I like include the MGS and RE series, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and many others. I can't explain why, but it's probably because those games have the various elements integrated and everything is there for a purpose. With regard to Films, just too many to mention! I grew up listening to John Williams, Bernard Herrmman, Jerry Goldsmith and many of the 'usual suspects'. But I also like a lot of jazz and electronica. Really, I like anything interesting, regardless of genre or origin.

CnCSaga : What kind of music do you prefer to compose?

J.H. : It varies a lot. What I get asked to do is mostly orchestral music, as once you have proven you can do that and manage a large scale production (like, say, Harry Potter) you gain more trust and often get asked to do similar things. But I like to compose in a wide variety of styles, and to fuse them when possible. Like a lot of contemporary composers, I like to fuse acoustic music with electronic textures when it makes sense to, and I look for ways of bringing other influences into games music as well – not just from film music. There really are no rules about what you can draw upon.

CnCSaga : Many cncsaga members love your Yuriko's Main Theme that you made for RA3 - Uprising, but what is the name of the singer and has she already worked on other projects?

J.H. : I enjoyed creating Yuriko's Theme, with its dense, close harmonies. This is an example of a track that hopefully doesn't state the obvious about what you already know about the game. IE. It's heard in an action/strategy game but this isn't an action-packed or overly exciting theme, but one which I hope adds to the sense that the Red Alert universe is a real place with people in it. It could have been a rousing rock or orchestral anthem to get the adrenaline going, but it felt more novel and useful to try to set up one of the central characters a bit in order to add some depth. In this case, to flesh out the world and story behind Yuriko. And the funny thing is, you can find that this has a result later on when you play the Yuriko missions, because you have this musical landscape and extra depth to the character in mind. I think creating themes is often about adding something you're not getting from the game on a visual basis.

There are two singers on this track. One is Miriam Stockley, who you can hear in tracks such as 'Adiemus' . And the other is soprano Satomi Morimoto, who you can hear singing those very high notes during the intro.

CnCSaga : How did EA contact you to work on Red Alert 3 and what did you like in this project?

J.H. : I've been working with EA for well over a decade, and have working relationships with a few people there -including Audio Director Nick Laviers at EA LA, who I've worked with for a long time. Like everybody else though, I still have to pitch for projects, so I was just invited to go for it and got on board when they liked my input.

CnCSaga : Did you already played a C&C'game before working for EA???

J.H. : Yes, I've played a few in the series and love them.

CnCSaga : Are you a video games player and what kind of video games do you like to play???

J.H. : I am a games player, when I get time, but I'm just so busy that I don't always get a chance to catch up on the latest games. What I tend to do is get a whole load at once and go through them in a short time to see what's going on, usually in between projects.

CnCSaga : Can you tell us the story behind Soviet March ???

J.H. : It was a lot of fun creating this theme! It was actually the first track produced on my side, but it wasn't one that had a particular place in the game at first (in other words it wasn't connected with the gameplay). It caught on and slowly moved into the position of being the game's theme (alongside Frank's Hell March 3!)

CnCSaga : Thank you very much James

Seems that EA (ie. Apoc) wanted to squish the nay-sayers once and for all and made some beautifully atmospherical, night-time shots displaying new units on both sides and a truly derelict landscape. Check them out here!

As seems to slowly becoming a tradition, 2Poc posted a new QaA at the official CnC forums. Here's a snip:

Quote:
Are there any structures that can be built besides defense turrets?

Yes! In addition to turrets, the defense player can build an array of supportive structures, including tunnel networks, stealth generators, shield generators, outposts, bunkers, and superweapons. In addition, many of the defensive structures are more than just simple turrets, and the way that you build your defensive grid will have a significant impact on the battles. The GDI rocket turrets, for example, use a system similar to the Patriot Missile System from Generals, allowing them to fire on enemies that a nearby turret can see, making proper creation of your rocket grid a very important gameplay element.

Apoc added a pretty quirky, yet expectedly humorous vid which features Joe answering 10 questions, asked by CM Aaron "Apoc" Kaufman. But enough talking, let the vid speak for itself:
