Red Alert 3 Community Summit |

This Page has been viewed 9,170 times On a dark stormy morning, I began a treacherous journey to the heart of secrecy, the EALA C&C Factory. I missed the first bus because of an incorrect internet posting, but made the second just fine. That only gave me a few spare minutes to get to the airport, but luckily I got through the mainly unused security checkpoint which made up for potentially waiting 15 minutes in line.
So I boarded an Airbus A320 which cruised around 26,000 feet to Los Angeles. It was around 72 degrees in Los Angeles, so quite balmy. On the cab ride to the Ritz-Carlton hotel, I got to hear why the high gas prices ($4.70 / gal) were so hard on cab drivers. They only were making about $150 or $200 per week. That's not very much.
I arrived at the hotel around 4:00 in the afternoon, and took a swim. It was rather pretty out there, and the hotel staff were as overly friendly as usual. I had a second floor room that looked out on the front parking, so not all that great. I headed down to the lobby around 5:45 being there was nothing else to do, and met Hexetic from PlanetCNC. It was the second time I met him in person, and so we talked a bit. Then there were a few germans who joined us and complained about missing their connection in Paris and having to stay at Disneyland for an extra day.
I met Sonic from CNCNZ, Chickendippers from CNC World, T'chutch from CNC Saga again, John from GameReplays, Mike the unlucky only chinese guy who wanted to come to EALA, Ryan from ModDB, SmurfBizkit from many mods incluing Asylum, Paul from CNCDen, Jamie from Strategy Informer (no, not the one who used to work here), Earnest from Wired magazine and TwoPoc who used to be from CNC Vision and now interns with EA.
At 6:45, 15 minutes after Apoc's said arrival time (still early for him), the man of the hour arrived! We hopped in taxis and drove off to a restaurant of which I didn't know the name. It had some tasty food though; I had a quesadilla and then some other tasty food that I don't quite remember. The more important part of the evening was meeting all the other fansite members. David Silverman (Battlecast Primetime) was there, the free food gets him every time!
We headed back to the hotel after dinner, and I headed to bed, it being 11:30 my time. Andrew (Voodoo Extreme) who came over from England was surprised to see me in bed so early, but let me tell you, I was ready to go the next morning.
Speaking of the next morning, we only had to wait 15 minutes yet again for Apoc to arrive. We headed over to EALA in taxis once again and went to the cafeteria named EAts. Breakfast Burrito truly is the breakfast of champions: eggs, potatoes, bacon, cheese all fried up and wrapped in a tortilla. Since I couldn't get enough grease, I opted for some biscuits with gravy on them.
Finally, at 9:30 we got to the presentations! The presentations were in the theater like the first C&C3 community summit. They were actually having some gaming competition finals in the blocked off half of the cafeteria this time.
Chris Corry gave the first presentation and it was an overview of Red Alert 3. The fundamentals of RA3 are this: light, fun, exhilarating gameplay with a popcorn storyline. They want it to have a summer matinee feel. To be an exciting, fun summer blockbuster that leaves you satisfied for what you came for. Time travel is going to be an integral part of gameplay, as is Navy. Water building and warfare is a core mechanic.
Instead of a supporting tactic like in Red Alert 2, it is going to be extended so that in a match between even half-decent players, the winner will be the one that uses the most of both sea and land. To this end, you can harvest resources in the water and many many vehicles are amphibious. There will also be 60 minutes of Full Motion Videos featuring plenty of actors they didn't tell us about . All the units have secondary abilities which are easy to trigger, because they all have one, and they all are activated when you press F. Some are as simple as exiting people from the vehicle, but others completely transform the unit.
The last big feature is Coop. It is very much improved. All missions will be for two players. Either they will have the players separated to work on two different objectives or using their combined forces to take out a larger objective. The mechanics behind this will require coordination. Also to this end, they'll be improving the AI so that it'll follow what you're doing. If you have two human players (in the campaign, yes!) there are plenty of ways to improve communication past the simple beacons. And as you advance in the campaign, you will unlock more AI generals with different tactics that you can play with. Pretty cool!
Then Matt gave a presentation on The background and influences of the Empire.
And after that, Greg Black introduced the factions. The Allies are a collection of liberal democracies that are really interested in peace. They don't want war, but when it's brought to them, they'll fight. That is why they have more support forces and are probably the most defensive side.
Allies build mechanic is like what we've seen in all C&C games up until now. (That's right, Generals wasn't a C&C game) Click to build, it builds and then you place the building and it deploys instantly. The Allied Construction Yard and Outpost provide ground cover, and a pretty substantial amount at that, but building do NOT increase ground cover. That means the Allied bases are built closer together. To advance to the next tier of tech (and build advanced structures and units), you must pay for an upgrade at the Outpost or CY, and you will only be able to build the advanced stuff at other outposts at or above the required tech level upgrade. If you redeploy your CY and then deploy it again, I am not sure if it keeps the tech level upgrades. I would certainly hope so though, but I didn't think to test it.
