Mission: Commentate
Deadline: August 14th, 2007
We just got really lazy. We want to enjoy some C&C, but don't want to bother to play it. So your mission is to come up with a replay file that will entertain us! Take a replay of yourself against a computer, a multiplayer battle or even a staged replay if you please, and commentate it. Use your mic, the telestrator and your best announcer voice and give it all you've got!
You can make your replay very staged and funny, or you can go completely professional with an exciting commentary of an exciting match.
Prizes:
- 1st: 12-month Fastpass + Renegade Mousepad + the chance to commentate a match between JohnWE and the community manager, Apoc. + C&C3 novel + a secret item from the C&C store that hasn't been released yet.
- 2nd: 6-month Fastpass + Renegade Mousepad + C&C3 novel + some sort of shirt or hat from the store.
- 3rd: 3-month Fastpass + Choice of C&C swag from the C&C store
Judging Criteria:
- Interestingness (20) - the ability to keep us engaged both with What you say and the Game you're commentating.
- Commentator Skill (20) - do you do a professional job speaking with little or no dead air space?
- Creativity (10) - do you manage to commentate in a unique way?
Rules:
- Replay must be from Patch 1.06 or later. We don't like the invincible bug.
- This should be obvious, it must be commentated by You.
- Submit it to johnwe@cnc-files.com by August 7th
Suggestions:
- Keep the replay shorter and more action intensive.
- Consider this a television show, and keep us entertained!
To add commentary to an existing replay:
Click Multiplayer -> Replays -> Check the 'Add Commentary' box, and load the replay!
And the bottom line:
Be creative. I can already think of many ways to make a unique, creative and entertaining replay!
We've come to the conclusion, and this is a fusion of... ok, I'll stop now. Take it or leave it, the Replay Contest has come to a grinding halt. (after it passed the finish line at least) Here are the five top entries and our three judges comparisons of all.
JohnWE - It's me. I like more professional replays or ones that would really make me laugh. I'll find problems if they are there to be found.
Mr. Funsocks - Assistant Site Manager here. An all around noob (sorry man)
srowell3 - C&C Legends Site Manager, our guest judge for this contest!
SithDagger --- Him Scrin vs. Easy GDI Steamroller
JohnWE:
Yes, this replay was a walkover. But Sith managed to keep the game very interesting. Perhaps some of it was a comedy of things that would never work online including building 4 cranes to start, and placing in five buzzer hives at once in the same place. Sith was never quiet (once you turned up your voice volume), he never said the dreaded 'filler' words like um. Only in a few places did he use the telestrator to spell out non-C&C related words on the screen, but the rest of his telestrator part was pretty basic. Definately gets points for the fact that the replay was 10 minutes, and when it was over, it did not feel like it had gone that long.

Mr. Funsocks:
Waiting five minutes to realize that the commentator's microphone volume was at an extreme low, I was forced to bump up my voice settings and bump down everything else which somewhat annoyed me. At the start of the game he uses his pen and makes odd choices with it, circling a harvester and then putting a line where the tiberium is when the harvester is right next to it... I've also noticed he started to ramble about buzzers for a while too. He keeps tabs on everything well, and uses the pen like an average commenter too, but sometimes circling things and not even telling a description. For lack of "maturity" and horrible sound quality, Sith obtains a 13 for Interestingness, a 11 for Commentator Skill, and a 6 for Creativity.

TheGunrun --- Nod sh4rp vs. GDI [DoE]Blitz
JohnWE:
Very good job with keeping talking all the time. However, the information was pretty self explanatory. It would have been nice to hear some more in-depth strategy commentary going on. No problem hearing the commentary. As for following the action, it wasn't so great. There were several spots where we were concentrating so much on one base that even an MCV rush which could be spotted on the minimap took TheGunrun by surprise. Also, the names of the people were confused, and referred to as GDI and Nod, and when their MCVs were traded back and forth, it was impossible to tell who was being referred to. No use of the telestrator.

Mr. Funsocks:
The start of the commentary hits hard as GunRun begins in a strong tone of voice. His voice is clear and interesting, sounding like a news anchor. A few problems I've noticed with his commentating though. He didn't really comment the Nod side barely any at all at the start of the game; which is a shame because Nod ends up rushing. He didn't use the pen at all to show anything, and as the game moves on he starts to say, "Um," a lot. Over all, I give GunRun a 17 on Interestingness, a 13 on Commentator Skill, and an average 5 for creativity.

Jason Slama --- JohnWE (Scrin), Puzzabug (Nod), Wuzzabug (Scrin) vs. madrocky (Nod), Keep'nitnoob (Scrin), Omega82 (GDI)
JohnWE:
Here's a delightful short match. JohnWE and Puzzabug somehow get disconnected in the start, leaving Wuzzabug to fend for himself. The commentary is useful, there's no dead space, and a decent use of the telestrator. The camera is in the right positions at the right times, so it is enjoyable. The voice cuts out at certain times, so that could be improved. Some units are followed through, for example we see the start of a surveyor, but never find out where it's going, and whether or not it could actually make a difference in the game until it's too late. Telestrator was used well throughout the game.

Mr. Funsocks:
Just at the start of this commentary you can tell that Jason speaks clearly and fluently for his viewers. Sadly, Jason chooses a very bad game to commentate on. It seems that the game was full of people that didn't really know how to play the game that well; as one player can use a MCV rush to take out 2 players... All of Jason's skills were average really, I think we would have a better thing to go off of if Jason chose a better game; but from seeing this he shows all average skills. Not bad at all, Jason gets a 14 in Interestingness, a 15 in commentator skill, and a 7 in Creativity.

KiF1rE --- KiF1rE (Scrin) vs. Sh4rp (GDI)
JohnWE:
A fantastic game game here, well commentated. KiF1rE doesn't miss a beat, and keeps the camera on the action at all times. If you wish to learn strategies, I'd suggest this replay. We get a good look at both bases and what they are building, and even why. A nice touch is when there is a major attack on Sh4rp, he drops Zone Troopers into the enemy base, so we get to see the drop, and then cut back to the battle, then cut back to the Zone Troopers, so we know exactly what happens in both places even though there's massive action going on. My only concern is that the telestrator was used in the start, but was forgotten by the end of the match.

Mr. Funsocks:
This is quite possibly the best game out of all the selections, letting the commentator express himself to his potential. I didn't think the commentary was as hot as the game though. The commentator shows little, to absolutely no emotion until the very end. He keeps tabs of what's going on...sort of. He misses a couple of small battles in the beginning, and fails to even acknowledge them. He uses the pen at the start of the game by using misshapen arrows, but then at the end of the game he seems to completely forget about the pen. This was definitely a good commentary, but all these small problems add up. For Interestingness, he gets a 17, a 15 for Commentator Skill, and a basic 5 in creativity.

Puzzabug --- Puzzabug (Scrin) vs. tuputavieja (Scrin)
JohnWE:
Here's a decent battle between Scrin and.. Scrin! Puzzabug makes very good use of the telestrator all the way through. We're even given some nice symbols, and his trademark Money, Money, Money! Very good job talking, the announcing (and it is announcing) is interesting the entire way through. Through the telestrator and his speech, he is very creative. As for professionalness, there is some lost when the buildings are referred to by names from previous games. It's ok to call a Saboteur an Engineer, but not so good when you call a Tiberium Spike a Tech Derrick. But old habits die hard I guess. A bit long of a battle and not very well played.

Mr. Funsocks:
I really enjoyed this commentary for some reason. I liked how the commentator kept tabs on everything at a not-too-fast pace, and I didn't hear any, "Ums," or, "Ahs." Which is very good on his part. The thing that got to me is the creativity of his commentary. He would get the pen and actually change colors of it depending on what team he was making a statement for. He also incorporates humor into the commentary, which really is a good treat away from the up-tight commentaries. For being funny and still keeping a mature attitude, he receives a 15 for Interestingness, a 16 on Commentator Skill, and a full blown 9 for creativity.
