 | | I'm leaving, on a jetplane? |
It started on a dark, stormy afternoon. It was the first time I had traveled overseas, so I was expecting it to take a lot longer getting through the airport, but thankfully it didn't.
 | | Five children within 10 feet... |
Flew an Airbus A333 to Amsterdam, a nice seven hour flight. It would have taken longer than that, but we had a problem with a valve in the right engine not opening, so it wouldn't start. After they got it started (we had to get out and push), the pilot put the pedal to the metal to get us there on time.
I would have had a window seat, but the guy sitting next to me stole it. He was

from Turkey and knew enough english to convey that he used to play strategy games and now plays WoW, but not enough to understand that he was sitting in my seat. After 6 hours of closing my eyes unsuccessfully
trying to sleep, we arrived in Amsterdam. A switch to a turboprop Fokker 50 carried me the rest of the way to Cologne safely.

| Numbering Fail | Train to the Hostel. | Lots of trains in Germany. |
 | | GamesCom signs were everywhere. |
I met Pete Larsen, an EA rep outside of customs, and apparently I had been sitting next to AGM from GameReplays on the way there, so we waited another five minutes for him. We were given a map and put on the right train to the hostel. On the plus side, many signs were in both English and German, but on the minus side, they weren't the signs we were looking for.
 | | The South entrance to GamesCom |
We did manage to get off at the right stop, but there were way too many branches in the underground tunnel system, so we came out on the wrong side. So 15 minutes of wandering around aimlessly, and then one short conversation later, we found the hostel.

After registering with someone from CNC Inside, we got our passes for GamesCom and decided to put them to good use. Cypher from the official forums and several other notable site was there and came with us. This was my first game convention, so I did not know exactly what to expect. My first impressions were rather negative.
 | | Assassin and AGM |
I wasn't interested in 80% of the games there, and there were long lines for all the popular games for either a presentation or some game testing. It was extremely loud in there; it was as if you were in a tunnel with a train. I talked with a few people from game booths that didn't have lines, mainly Section 8 and Order of War. At a later time, there was a live concert going on in one part of an exhibition hall, and that was even louder, but when I got halfway across the hall, I couldn't hear the band anymore. I suppose I would have more fun if I could understand the language.
 | | Nintendo Booth |
After about 30 minutes of that, it was time to go find lunch. AGM and I didn't see any food between the convention and the hostel, so we decided to ask somebody in the hostel. Assassin from CnC Source was there, so he came along for the search. We found a mexican restaurant, McDonald's and a Subway, but preferred to eat at somewhere more local.
 | | DJ Hero, in case you can't read... oh wait. |
Eventually we found a restaurant in a hotel that looked the most authentic of them all. It turned out to be more generic than we imagined, but it was good to get food. The waitress was chinese, and her name tag said that she spoke English, but that was rather lacking.
We headed back to the GamesCom for another 45 minutes, then went back to the hostel because AGM and Assassin had another event scheduled. We checked into our hostel rooms and then they headed out. I headed back to the GamesCom. The hostel was across the road and train tracks from the convention center, but the walk was 15 minutes! Across the road, down underneath the train tracks, up to the outside of the center, inside, then outside again, inside the next building section, up stairs, down an escalator, then finally you're at the exhibition halls. This is the largest Game Convention in the world! Bigger than E3!

I finished off the rest of GamesCom, seeing what was in the other exhibition halls. Being up for about 30 hours, it was time to get some real sleep.
 | | The Cathedral from GamesCom South. |
So I walked back to the hostel for the third time in the 90º weather and took a shower and promptly fell asleep. I was awakened three hours later when I was joined by several other members in my room. Apparently five people would fit in it, and they were Muyang Li from MyCNC, Assassin from CNC-Source, Zack an editor from a Singapore-based magazine and Apollo the pro-ish gamer. It was dark when I awoke, I didn't have my glasses on, but managed to guess who Muyang Li was. Lucky me!
 | | Why eat cultural food when you can have McDonald's? |
We headed down, met up with several others including 2Poc, the community manager from EA, Cypher, Chickendippers, MissusCT and CommanderT, the official forum moderators and Dynamic, the ladder season finalist. We looked around for a good place to eat food, but finding nothing indigenous, we resorted to McDonald's Sad, I know. Then, it was bed time for me. Some others went to the bar which was located in our youth hostel. I slept for a few hours, then Assassin comes in a 3am and turns on the overhead light and starts to talk about his mod, Tiberian Sun Rising. Aaaaah! The seven hour time difference, the very warm temperature and Zack and Apollo's snoring does little to help me sleep.

The game sound decent but with no tib and a pop cap. they are ruining it.
The rest of the game had better work |
